Under the general direction of the Regional Vice President, Underwriting the person in this position is a leader of a multi-disciplinary team. This team is responsible for the profitable production and retention of an assigned book of business. Customer satisfaction with agents, clients and internal departments is essential. Working with assigned underwriters, the manager will be responsible for the development and management of the underwriting process to improve loss frequency and ratios, and maintain premium volume to individual and corporate strategies. Must have the ability to operate without supervision or direction in the handling of the most complex or unique underwriting situations.
1. Demonstrates leadership by creating an environment that fosters teamwork, values diversity, and which supports and respects all team and company staff members, internal and external customers, and vendors. Is responsible for selecting, managing, developing, coaching and motivating the staff members. 2. Directs and monitors the underwriting strategy for the specified location division per corporate guidelines and goals. 3. Develops staff proficiencies with NCCI, and State rules and regulations. 4. Monitors and enforces underwriting procedures and guidelines, and monitors underwriter compliance with established authority levels. 5. Monitors staffing levels and developmental needs the underwriting staff and make recommendations as needed. 6. Develops and monitors the agency and account relationships within the specified location. 7. Develops and monitors profitability, account retention and new business production goals to match overall corporate strategy. 8. Interacts and coordinates as needed with finance, actuarial, IT and claims departments, establishes and maintains teamwork. 9. Other duties as assigned or as situation dictates.
Working conditions are typical of a computer-based work environment, including sitting for extended periods of time. • Occasional lifting of a maximum of 30 lbs. • Frequent use of PC, including keyboarding and monitor viewing.
• Must have a minimum of 8 years experience in underwriting in the workers compensation arena and have a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience/training. • Must have strong technical skills and excellent communication skills. • Demonstrated 3 years experience in strategic planning and operational planning. • Demonstrated experience in marketing and working directly with agents and brokers. • Demonstrated knowledge necessary to identify and evaluate the exposures and hazards related to all workers compensation insurance coverage for the most complex business operations and processes in order to offer an intelligent, informed and appropriate underwriting decision. • Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead and train underwriters and assistants. • Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of complex technical reference codes, laws and regulations affecting the insurance industry. • Demonstrated skill in developing risk management and underwriting programs. • Demonstrated skill in investigating and analyzing clients and the ability to develop and sell insurance programs to meet their needs and our profitability goals. • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and insurance accounts. • Must be able to travel, including overnight travel throughout assigned territory.
• Insurance carrier experience is preferred.
